Projects

Projects are divided into two overarching themes; Community Capacity Enhancement (CCE) and Natural Resources Management (NRM). PCDF’s workforce is also divided into these teams - the CCE team and the NRM team, as well as a core group of finance and administration staff. Each team is headed by a Programme Coordinator.

Our projects are categorised as follows:

Supporting the sustainable management of marine and coastal resources

Cakaubulabula (Living Reefs) Project
Aim: To support the conservation and sustainable management of marine and coastal resources by communities, resorts and marine industries in the areas most utilised and impacted by the tourism and coral-reef based industries of Fiji, resulting in increased fish catches, enhanced tourism, and enhanced reef-based industries.

Locations:
Yasawa (4 villages), Nacula (7 villages) and Moturiki (10 villages).

Donor: USAID

Community Based Protection of Coral Reefs and Healthy Reefs Project
Aim: To address root causes of marine degradation and rural poverty by supporting sustainable livelihood initiatives as incentives to conservation.

Locations:
Serua (8 villages) and Moturiki (10 villages).

Donors: Evangelischer Entwicklungsdienst (EED) & AusAID

Cuvu Community Environmental Initiative
Aim: To find and apply permanent solutions to long-standing environmental, socio-political and cultural problems which negatively impact tourism at Shangri-La Fijian Resort.

Location:
Shangri-La Fijian Resort. Coral Coast, Fiji.

Donor: Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort

Awareness training workshops

Good Governance Project

Aim: To promote participatory practices of good governance and developments for sustainable livelihoods in the communities through three strategic objectives of empowerment, empathy and engagement.

Locations:
FSPI oversee this project in 7 South Pacifi c countries. Within Fiji, PCDF runs this project in 18 villages in 4 districts (Tikina): Batiki, Nairai in Lomaiviti Province, Yale in Kadavu Province and Nalawa in Ra Province.

Donor:
New Zealand Agency for International Development (NZAID), Australian Agency for International Development (AUSAID), through the Foundation of the Peoples of the South Pacific International (FSPI).

Addressing rural poverty & contributing to sustainable improved livelihoods

Mainstreaming Of Rural Development Innovations Programme (MORDI)

Aim: To contribute to sustainable, improved livelihoods of vulnerable communities, (especially youth and women) living in remote rural areas of Pacific Island Countries. Working in line with the Millennium Development Goals, through four key components: community empowerment; economic empowerment; learning, sharing and upscaling; and programme management.

  • MORDI Fiji assist 29 villages with a combined population of 3,273.
  • Five fishing boats have been donated to the communities (four boats as a source of income to the community and one boat (solely used for MPA) which polices the community boundary.
  • MORDI have financed one women’s club cooperative store, a footpath, and two satellite phones were installed in remote areas of Viti Levu.

Locations: Veinuqa district (5 villages), Wailevu district (13 villages), and Kubulau district (10 villages).

Donor: International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) through the regional Mainstreaming of Rural Development Innovations (MORDI) program, which coordinates the programme across the Pacific.

Capacity building & developing monitoring processes

Capacity Building for Rural Education Project

Aim: To build capacity of rural-based leaders in education.

Locations: PCDF runs this project in 7 provinces, all on Viti Levu: Tailevu, Rewa, Naitasiri, Nadroga-Navosa, Namosi, Serua and Ra.

Donor: Misereor & Catholic Centre Agency for Development Aid (KZE).

Provide reliable water supply systems

Just Water Project

Aim: To provide a reliable water supply system, managed by an empowered school management committee which has undergone appropriate training in 12 rural schools identified by the Ministry of Education.

Locations: Ba Province - Yasawa Secondary School
Kadauvu Province - Bulou Dolele Memorial School, Naceva District School
Nadroga/ Navosa - Nalagi Public School, Tuva Indian School
Naitasiri Province - Naqali District School, Wainawaqa Disrict School
Macuata Province - Vudibasoga Catholic School
Ovalau - Levuka Marist Convent School
Ra Province - Navunibitu Catholic School
Tailevu Province - Naqia Seventh Day Adventist School, Wailotua District School

Maiwai – Water Awareness & Management Project

Aim: To complete awareness training workshops on behalf of the donor with an outcome of generating Water Management Plans and Water Monitoring Committees in communities identified by the donor as having water problems.

Locations: 12 workshops are being held across the provinces of Tailevu, Ra, Naitasiri, Rewa, Ba, Macuata, and Cakaudrove, which will reach a total of 22 villages and 2 schools, and benefit an estimated 5740 people.

Reducing the stigma attached to mental health issues

Youth And Mental Health Project

Aim: To increase the awareness of and reduce the stigma attached to mental health issues, through four key components: awareness and education/sustainable livelihoods, research, promotions and advocacy.

Locations: FSPI oversee this project in 8 South Pacific countries. PCDF runs this project in Fiji, but currently, due to funding constraints, most of the work has been done in the Central Division.
